If you're unsure of how important Will (Bonnie "Prince" Billy) Oldham is to a generation of lo-fi folk artists, check out Jeffrey Lewis's song "Williamsburg Will Oldham Horror", a twisted tale that paints Oldham as the modern-day inheritor of Bob Dylan.
If that is the case, 'Lie Down in the Light' marks the arrival of BPB's "nothing left to prove" phase: it's a 'New Morning' rather than a 'Blood on the Tracks'. Having said that, there is enough breezily played magic here to ensure that Oldham is still the underground artist most likely to work his way into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
From Drag City Records. best Luck to a friend there.
